Dominique Kral: Print-Queen In The Making

published in: Fashion Design, 27 Sep 2012

Now that the prints seem to be reigning the runways for the past seasons and turning into a permanent trend, it is a pleasure to present a fresh young talent. Her name is Dominique Kral, a British womenswear designer, and print-queen in the making.

After winning the Zandra Rhodes Catwalk Textiles Award at Graduate Fashion Week in 2011, Dominique launched her namesake label. "I love different textures and fabrics and putting them together to accentuate their qualities. I am most inspired by nature as its so easy to find countless textures, surfaces, colours, and interoperate them in so many different ways manipulating them with photography and digital media," Kral explains of what inspires her. Music also plays quite a big part in her collections. Each season has its own soundtrack, which inspires the subject matter, colours and styling of the collections. "At the moment i just plan on making my label a successful business," is all Dominique can say for the future, and it sure will be bright for this one.

We reached out to Dominique and asked her if we could pick her brain. Access granted!

Fashion-Pixel: What is your personal style when it comes to dressing?
Dominique Kral: I don’t know if I have a particular style so much. I suppose I have quite a dark, rocker sort of edgy but crossed with glitter and girly stuff. I like sparkly skulls, dark grey, crazy prints, lacy textures and slouchy knitwear. That probably sums up my style.

F-P: What is your favourite colour?
DK: I love colour, its too difficult to pick any one in particular because my brain goes ‘I like pink, but I like green too, and turquoise, and red, and orange, and yellow ……..’ and on and on.

F-P: Which designer do you admire?
DK: I admire so many designers, everyone brings something new and fantastic to the table. Favourites ant the moment are Mary Katrantzou and Meadham Kirchhoff.

F-P: Do you have a piece of jewellery that means a lot to you? What is it? If you want, tell us why is it so important to you?
DK: I have so much jewellery, I do love to accessorise, I don’t think any one piece means more than another. I don’t want to leave anyone out, they have feelings you know.

F-P: What are you going to buy next for your wardrobe? Where from?
DK: It's totally boring but a must have. I am in need of some new jeans, they will more than likely come from Topshop.

F-P: What is your favourite outfit?
DK: You can't go wrong with a pair of jeans, funky T-shirt and a slouchy bright cardigan.

F-P: Do you usually buy clothes from your trips abroad?
DK: If I see something I like I'll buy it. I love going to the vintage shops in Paris.

F-P: What piece would you place in a fashion museum?
DK: I have a YSL little vintage 1980s cropped navy blue jacket which I got a ridiculous £10 from a local charity shop. I love it, it has big shoulders and I do love a big shoulder.

F-P: What is a key item that all wardrobes should have?
DK: A good pair of skinny jeans.

F-P: Would you like to live in another era?
DK: I would love to live in every era from around 1900 to now. It would have been great if I could have been around 20 in 1900 and stayed 20 forever.

F-P: What is your favourite material to use?
DK: I like to use natural fabrics mostly, it depends what mood I'm in I suppose but I do like to drape fabric on the stand with soft fabric that you can create texture with.

F-P: What is your fashion fetish?
DK: Leather trousers and chunky heels.

F-P: What is your latest fashion obsession?
DK: Glitter shoes and print trousers.

F-P: How do you determine what is chic?
DK: I like it .
