Jessica Durrant's Magical World of Illustration

published in: Fashion Illustration, 22 Jan 2013

All That Glitters

Jessica Durrant is a gifted full time freelance illustrator and art instructor from "fabulous Las Vegas," as she says, though she currently resides "in the beautiful Atlanta area." Jessica studied Illustration at Southern Utah University where she received her Bachelors, specialising in fashion, travel and lifestyle illustrations.

Yellow And Turquoise

Though I came across Durrant's oh-so-chic-and-feminine works on the virtual corridors of Etsy.com, her magical illustrations have already been noticed by the likes of (try not to say it all in one breath people!) One Kings Lane, QVC.com, Glamour.com, Westfield Malls, Country Living Magazine, Rue Magazine, UK's Livingetc Magazine, Matchbook Magazine, 30 Days of Fashion & Beauty New Zealand,The Little Green Notebook, ELLE Brazil, The Glamourai, IN London magazine, SHOP til you drop magazine Australia and other publications worldwide. And even though such publicity might have someone else turn into a snob, Jessica never forgets to mention the important role her loyal Etsy.com customers play in her work: "I feel so happy and grateful to know that things I've created in the comfort of my own home, are being bought and shipped allover the world to awesome Etsy buyers!"

Always The Flower Child

Durrant's art is inspired by her passion for all things fashion, her obsession with traveling, Japanese illustration, rock n' roll music, a zillion magazines, and fellow artisans. Some of her favourite illustrators include the greats like David Downton, Rene Gruau, Bil Donovan, Sharon Pinsker and Stina Persson. "They heavily inspire me and I've created a few homages to them in my early personal work," she explains.

Empire State Of Mind

As for her future goals, in Jessica's own words: "My goal is just to become a better artist, and keep challenging myself to create good art. I have so much room to grow and hope I can keep at it as long as I am alive!"

Jessica set aside her watercolours and brushes for a moment and granted Fashion-Pixel.com the classic-by-now interview:

The Prep

Fashion-Pixel: What is your personal style when it comes to dressing?
Jessica Durrant: I really love the way European women dress. I try to emulate their look of less is more. I am pretty feminine, and I love jackets and dresses. I don’t like to follow trends too much. Style is about knowing what works for you and playing up your own personal beauty. You become more confident that way as a woman when you play up what you like about yourself-as opposed to trying to look like someone else.

F-P: What is your favourite colour?
JD: Blue.

F-P: Which designer do you admire?
JD: Alexander McQueen.

F-P: Do you have a piece of jewellery that means a lot to you? What is it? If you want, tell us why is it so important to you?
JD: Certainly, I have a few pieces that I have bought for myself as a way to celebrate milestones in my career. I like statement necklaces and rings. I am not good at mixing jewelry like other women. I usually wear one bold piece. I have a pair of beautiful Ippolita earrings I got after celebrating a successful sale I had. I was with my best friend when I bought them. It was a fun occasion.

F-P: What are you going to buy next for your wardrobe? Where from?
JD: I think I would like a black leather pencil skirt.

F-P: What is your favourite outfit?
JD: I recently bought a black lacy dress that I just adore. It was an investment. Paired with simple jewelry and heels.

F-P: Do you usually buy clothes from your trips abroad?
JD: Not too much, since I am picky and I have to try on a lot of things before I find what I like. And I don’t want to spend time in a dressing room when I am traveling abroad. I end up just finding accessories-scarves or jewelry. Since those are much easier to shop for.

F-P: What piece would you place in a fashion museum?
JD: My Pucci dress :)

The Golden Cuff

F-P: What is a key item that all wardrobes should have?
JD: A tailored, structured blazer. A white button down. A great black dress. Sleek black pumps, a trench coat, and dark skinny jeans.

F-P: Would you like to live in another era?
JD: I really like the era we are in.

F-P: What inspires you?
JD: People, places, nature, music...it’s a vast world with so much to inspire.

F-P: What is your favourite material to use?
JD: Watercolor.
The Yellow Trench

F-P: What is your fashion fetish?
JD: I do love Noir looks.

F-P: What is your latest fashion obsession?
JD: I’ve always been obsessed with leather.

F-P: How do you determine what is chic?
JD: I think if Marion Cotillard would wear this...then it would be chic! haha!

F-P: Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers?
JD: Have fun getting dressed :)
