Devastee A/W 2012-13: The Dark Side of Elegant!

published in: Fashion Design, 02 Aug 2012

Devastee, a brand based in Senlis, France, is the epitome of chic goth style and the brainchild of a young fashion designing duo, Ophélie Klère and François Alary. Their palette is strictly based in black and white, and though it is described as "dark and morbid," the collection in no way lacks in humor - just look at the smiley faces and other macabre jokes they use.

According to their story, it was destiny that brought them together in 1999, while they were both in the South of France. "At that time we were already used to spending some days and nights in our favorite tombs but we were not that much interested in fashion," the duo explains. "We finally decided to start our label in 2004 with various little depressing things. The darker the better." There unique line kept on growing, and today Devastee showcases its collections twice a year during Paris Fashion Week.

Their Autumn/Winter 2012-13 collection could be described as casual inspired by pierrots. Most of the collection had printed crosses, spoons, scissors, hands, orange slices and juicers, ghosts and skulls and cheeky smiley faces on almost see-through silk crêpe. A black felted wool dress that had cross-and-smiley-faced cut-outs stole the show. Overall moiré patterns on tuxedos and loose-fit pants added elegance to the designers' trademark black and white style. Magnified draped dresses and Joker-like painted smiles underlined the dark yet chic styles of the duo, with a certain playfulness. “We just wanted to put a broad smile on the girl's faces”, says Ophélie Klère.

The Devastee designers answered our questions in there very unique manner, and giving us a glimpse of their effortlessly cool and quirky personality:
