Fernando Lessa: From Biology to Fashion Photography

published in: Photography, 07 Nov 2012

It's funny in life how we start to doing one thing and come to succeed in a completely different one. Such is the case (among many others) of my dear friend and photographer extraordinaire, Fernando Lessa

Fernando started studying Biology in his native Brazil, only ended up with a Masters Degree in Fashion photography in London from London College of Fashion. "As I was interested in photography (as a hobby), I thought it might be an alternative," he explains.

After a year as an assistant in a studio, he started as a freelance photographer. In 2009, he managed to scoop up the 1st prize at a competition by the Culture & Art department, São Paulo Government, and in 2012 the Portfolio award: 44 Contemporary art Saloon, both in Brazil.

Fernando enjoys working on fashion and beauty assignments between São Paulo and London, whilst developing his personal projects in the fields of alternative processes and techniques, as well as hand painted fine art photography. He also works as a researcher in the field of photography. His work has been exhibited in Brazil, United Kingdom and Indonesia, showing the wide market Lessa's art attracts.

Lessa is presently focused on the ‘technical” field, working on the pictures he did during his second year in London, in order to improve his  printing abilities, especially vintage printing.

His latest project, though not related to fashion photography, is a  series called Kinksters, and is Fernando's attempt to explore the world of fetishism by bringing together his two sides: biology and photography. "My original work revolves around human beings and their behavior. I am a biologist and I see the man as an animal and its behavior is what interests me," says Lessa.

In Brazil, Fernando is currently represented by Zipper Gallery, while also working in collaboration with Hands On collective, delivering workshops in Brazil. You can also find his works online on the Saatchi & Saatchi's gallery website.
